Every single one of your teeth plays an integral role in the health of your overall smile. With every tooth that is lost, your ability to chew comfortably, speak clearly, and smile confidently begins to diminish. Traditional tooth replacements like dentures and bridges have come a long way, but by far the most natural-looking and -feeling solution is dental implants. Essentially, they’re built just like your real teeth, so they’re the next best thing to having your original smile back. Contact our team at Aesthetic Dental Center today to find out how we can give you a complete set of pearly whites with dental implants in Concord.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant refers to a small titanium cylinder that is surgically inserted under the gumline and directly into the jawbone where the roots of a missing tooth used to be. Once placed, the implant post chemically bonds to the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This bond allows the implants to strengthen the bone and prevent it from deteriorating as it otherwise would after tooth loss. Additionally, it creates a lasting, stable foundation for any number of replacement teeth to be secured on top of the implants.

The Dental Implant Process

Dental implant treatment is quite varied from one patient to another. However, most patients undergo four basic phases:

  1. Consultation – Dr. Marshall examines your mouth, reviews your medical history, and plans out your treatment.
  2. Surgery – You’re referred to our partnered oral surgeon, who strategically positions the dental implant posts within your jaw.
  3. Osseointegration – The implants merge with your jawbone over the course of three to six months.
  4. Placement of restorations – Once your implants are ready, we can secure your custom crown, bridge, or denture onto them.

Benefits of Dental Implants

More than half a million dental implants are placed each year, and it’s not hard to see why they’ve become so popular. Because they recreate the entire structure of missing teeth rather than just sitting on the gums, dental implants provide many unique benefits, including:

  • Preservation of the jawbone and facial structure
  • Keeping the remaining teeth properly aligned
  • Replacement teeth that won’t slip around or fall out
  • Clear speech
  • Enhanced chewing
  • Easy maintenance
  • Average lifespan of 30+ years
  • New teeth that look and feel natural
  • Able to replace any number of missing teeth

Who Can Dental Implants Help?

The main quality that makes you a good candidate for dental implants (besides missing one or more teeth) is the state of your health. As long as you’re in generally good oral and overall health, there’s a strong chance that dental implants can help you. Even if you’ve suffered from jawbone loss, gum disease, or other oral health issues, certain preparatory procedures can increase the odds of successful treatment.

After Dr. Marshall has evaluated your case, he can recommend a treatment plan based on how many teeth you’ve lost:

Missing One Tooth

To recreate a single missing tooth, the oral surgeon can vertically insert one dental implant post into the empty space. Then, we top it with an abutment, which holds a personalized dental crown in place. You end up with a replacement tooth that seamlessly blends in with the rest of your smile in terms of the ways it looks and feels.

Missing Multiple Teeth

Rather than removing healthy structure from two of your remaining teeth to support a dental bridge, we can replace multiple missing teeth with just two implants – one placed at either end of the gap. We then anchor a lifelike dental bridge to these posts, which holds your prosthetic teeth firmly in place without compromising the health of your natural teeth.

Missing All Teeth

Regular dentures sit on top of the gums, but that isn’t always sufficient for patients to speak and chew with confidence. If that’s the case for you, we can talk about implant dentures. With this solution, a full denture can be anchored onto just four to eight dental implants placed throughout the jaw. Not only do implant dentures prevent slipping, but they look and feel so much like your natural teeth, you might even forget you have a denture at all!

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants

So many variables come into play when planning dental implant treatment, which is why it’s impossible for us to provide a cost estimate until you’ve physically stepped into our office and had Dr. Marshall look over your situation. Once we’ve reviewed these factors – such as the number of teeth you’re replacing and the density of your jawbone – we can then discuss your payment options, including dental insurance and CareCredit financing.
